University of Bellarmine – Branson gets second place to lead the Knights' fight at Findlay Open

FINDLAY, Ohio – Junior Gage Branson continued his excellence in the first season by winning runner-up honors in the 149-pound weight class when the Bellarmine University wrestling team competed on Saturday at the prestigious Open of Findlay.

Branson lost a 4-1 decision to Evan Cheek of Cleveland State in the finals, but not before he emerged victorious in five games. Branson won in a sudden victory over Indiana Tech's Justin Atkinson, who ranks fourth in NAIA, and covered Brendon Fitzgerald of Ohio State. Branson is 15-1 this season.

Freshman Brian Stears lost his first game in 285, but continued with five consecutive victories. Stears reached the limit of the match before he could compete in the fifth / sixth round.

Sophomore Eric Beck captured three wins at 157. In addition, sophomore Brett Bryant (184) and freshmen Brandon Lucas (125 ), Casey Ragle (133), Gavin Grime (165) and Gerald Seeney (285) each won one.

"In general, everyone had bright spots and areas where we need to improve," said Knights coach Spencer Adams . "The more we face the better, the better we will be in the long term, I thought that as a team we defended ourselves and most of the games we lost were tough, we have to increase speed and intensity, another notch to win those big games. For the Midwest Classic (December 15 to 16), we must be at that point so we can start knocking down the boys ranked in each weight, meanwhile, we need to practice that mentality in the room and in the next six games here to then. "
