BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Sydney Johnson led BU with 12 points and her classmate Liz Shean added 11 points from the bench, but Maine edged BU to a 59-57 Decision Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
Despite being lost for most of the second half, the Terriers (2-2) gained a 57-56 lead with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth when sophomore Caitlin Weimar fed to senior Riley Childs for an unopposed layup in the left block. The Black Bears (2-3) made one of two free throws on subsequent possession to tie the score. However, with nine seconds remaining, BU could not cleanly enter the ball and handed it to Maine. After two fouls, Anne Simon made two free throws, and Emily Esposito's 3-pointer missed the mark to seal the contest. the biggest advantage was only five. However, the Black Bears erased a halftime deficit by nullifying 50 percent of their shots in the second half. BU made nine of his 16 attempts in the fourth quarter, but fell 2 of 12 in the third.
Childs scored BU's first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, adding three steals. Weimar scored 10 points on 5 of 8 shots, cornering six boards.
Simon led all scorers with 26 points. Maeve Carroll also scored a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Baile Wilborn scored four triples.
The Terriers regroup for the final game of their three-game home run, welcoming Yale on Wednesday, November 24 at noon.
