Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador announced the decision Friday in a statement posted on its website and social media channels.

Dr. Florentine Strzelczyk, Chancellor and Academic Vice President, says the measure is in line with the school's strategic plan, which requires Memorial to prioritize the well-being and care of its community.
Strzelczyk says more details about the deadlines to have the first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, and about possible exclusions from the rule, will be released in the next few days.

Its statement says that non-medical masks will be mandatory as of August 23 in public spaces and common areas when distancing protocols physical properties cannot be properly maintained.
The mandatory order of Newfoundland and Labrador masks ended on August 10, but public health recommends that people continue to wear them.
