Man in custody shot to death by Duke University police officer while in ER :: WRAL.com

Officials say the man he was in the custody of the Durham Police Department at the time of the shooting. A struggle ensued and the man managed to wrestle the Durham officer's gun away.

A Duke University police officer responding to the scene shot the man, Duke officials said. Officials did not say how many times the man was shot and did not provide additional information about how the shooting occurred.

The hospital's trauma staff began treating the man who was shot immediately, but he did not survive.

As a protocol, the Duke University Police Department contacted the State Bureau of Investigation. State officials were at the hospital conducting an investigation early Saturday morning.

The officers involved in this incident were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting.

The Durham police officer was also treated for injuries at the hospital on Friday night, but authorities did not say how badly he was hurt. No other patients or hospital staff were physically injured.

Capacity in the emergency department has been reduced, university officials said, while the shooting is investigated.

This is the third man shot dead by a police officer in the Triangle this week. On Tuesday, Raleigh police killed a man after responding to a crash on the side of Interstate 440. The next day, Durham police shot and killed a man inside a Circle K who was injuring himself. and a gas station attendant.

Duke University has about 70 police officers on staff and provides security for Duke University and its health system, according to the Duke website. Duke employs both police and security officers. Police officers in the university system are fully appointed and function as city officers.

A job description for police officers at Duke says the university is looking for someone who "upholds the sanctity of all life in every encounter. Decrease difficult situations, volatile, violent, or threatening behavior while maintaining calm, empathy and maintains momentum. control."
