I will not even begin with the violations of human rights against the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. If the University of Mary does not want to be on the same side as Amnesty International or the United Nations, so be it. But it seems to me that a Catholic institution should at least be on the same side as the Pope.
In 2015, Pope Francis published a 200-page encyclical that asked all Catholics to get rid of fossil fuels. More than 40 Catholic organizations from all over the world got rid of $ 5.5 trillion dollars. So how can Mary's University even begin to defend the ethics behind this new alliance with ETP?
U Mary would do well to remember that although the DAPL developers managed to buy North Dakota, the university is part of, and has the responsibility of, a global community. That community is watching.
Sincerely, Mary's University does not believe that future students are smart enough to see what happened here? Do prospective students really care about getting a Catholic education from an institution that defends the Pope's mandates?
I urge Mary's University to donate that $ 5 million to United Tribes Technical College. I urge Catholics throughout the state to insist on it. Pity Monsignor Shea. Her leadership has put Mary's University seriously out of sync with her own stated values and ethics. I urge you to resign.
