PHOENIX – Grand Canyon University announced in a press release Friday that it will open its coronavirus vaccination center on Tuesday with a plan to administer 500 -800 doses per day.
Open from 8 a.m. at 5 p.m. From Tuesday to Saturday during the first week, the university expects to expand to 12 hours a day and seven days a week in the following weeks, provided there are sufficient doses of vaccine.
Those who are eligible can pre-register online for the vaccine dispensing point, known as POD, which is part of the Maricopa County Public Health Department.
The vaccination site is located in the GCU shopping center at 27th Avenue and Camelback Road.
The first week of the POD will accommodate those who need their second dose of the Phase 1A vaccine protocol at the request of the county health department, according to the release, alleviating the difficulty of getting appointments for people in both the 1A and in Groups 1B.
As hours and eligibility expand, GCU says the POD will provide additional services for those without a vehicle and dependent on public transportation.
"We've invested heavily in the communities surrounding our university and this is another opportunity to serve those neighborhoods on the west side of the city," GCU President Brian Mueller said in a press release.
“These are historic times and the effort reflects GCU's values and mission to care for those in our community. Our faculty, staff, and students are very excited to support this effort. ”
The GCU site is one of seven PODs in Maricopa County, according to the release, and will be managed almost entirely by university volunteers.
