Boilermakers eventually fall to the state of Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Despite two runs in the first inning, the Purdue softball team failed to close out its final series at Michigan State, falling on a 3-2 walk and splitting the four-road game.

Purdue's seven hits came from three players. Rachel Becker went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run, a double and a walk. Freshman Kaitlyn Brannstrom was 2 for 3 and drove the only runs in the game for Purdue. Kiley Goff also posted a 2 out of 3.

Brannstrom gave the Boilermakers an early lead in the first inning. The freshman scored a 3-2 bid over the wall on the right for a two-run shot, her second of the year. The races turned out to be the only Purdue reunited.

The Boilermakers only put running backs in scoring position in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded.

The Michigan State pitching staff scattered seven hits and only walked two. Starter Alli Walker struck out five in her three innings of action, giving up both runs in the first. Reliever Ashley Miller took the win after four innings of work without a run-down and four strikeouts.

The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, coming in with one single and one hit per pitch in consecutive at-bats.

In Purdue's circle, starting pitcher Ashley Peters pitched 2 1/3 innings with two runs, one earned, against and a strikeout. Savanah Henley came in relief to strike out five, allow five hits and one run.

Alex Barroso's double between right and center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh propelled Marissa Trivalpiece to lead the hosts to passing victory.
